The Sangrur Nagar Council has not sent any proposal to the Department of Local Government to get funds for decentralising solid waste management. The rest 166 Urban Local Bodies in the state have received funds and started working to decentralise waste after submitting their proposals.

“Of the total 167 Urban Local Bodies in the state, only the Sangrur Nagar Council has not sent any proposal to us to get funds to decentralise solid waste management. I asked them even today during a workshop to submit their proposal so that they can get funds within four-five days,” said Naresh Kumar, senior manager, Punjab Infrastructure Development Company.

He was in the city to preside over a workshop of employees of the district Urban Local Bodies here.

The Nagar Council has leased the land from a farmer, who has not been allowing unloading of waste since August 16 due to non-release of his pending payment.

“The decentralisation of solid waste management through the construction of pits can provide a big help to the city. However, despite our repeated meetings with Sangrur Nagar Council officials, they are not taking required steps,” said Gagan Kundra, Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, Sangrur.

“Since the council has not got money, our group members have constructed two pits near the Sangrur Central Jail after contributing Rs 24,000. We are willing to contribute more if the NC authorities take any initiative,” she said.

Nagar Council president Ripudaman Singh Dhillon claimed that they had sent a proposal for funds.

“We have sent a proposal for funds, but have not received money yet. I will take up the matter with the senior authorities,” he said.
