Five more succumb, toll rises to 83 in Punjab

With five more deaths being reported, the Covid-19 toll in the state reached 83 today.

Two deaths each were reported from Jalandhar and Ludhiana, and one from Amritsar.

A 65-year-old Malerkotla resident died at Christian Medical College and Hospital. She was admitted to the hospital on June 14 following complaints of shortness in breath, fever and cough. On June 15, she tested positive for Covid-19.

She was suffering from Hepatitis-C, chronic liver disease and was kept on ventilator support, said the CMCH authorities.

In Amritsar district, the toll reached 26 with the death of a 62-year-old man. The district health authorities identified the deceased as Santokh Singh of the Sultanwind road.

The district also reported 35 new positive cases, taking the total count to 691. Of the 35 cases, eight were contacts of positive cases. The district has witnessed 478 recoveries till date. A total of 188 patients are presently admitted to various hospitals.

Similarly, with the death of a 30-year-old woman in Jalandhar, the number of positive cases and deaths has risen to 418 and 14, respectively.

The woman who died today was a resident of Pachranga (Bhogpur). A diabetic and a patient of chronic kidney disease, she had been admitted to the hospital on June 11. She was on ventilator support.

Meanwhile, Covid-19 cases continued to spike as a total of 118 fresh cases were reported in the state. With this, the number of cases has reached 3,615.

As per the media bulletin, among districts, Amritsar reported 39 cases, Ludhiana 21, Patiala 12, Sangrur and Barnala eight each, SAS Nagar seven, Tarn Taran six, Hoshiarpur five, Gurdaspur four, Kapurthala and Fatehgarh Sahib two each and Jalandhar, Ferozepur, Mansa and Ropar one each.

Of the 21 cases reported from Ludhiana, 15 are contacts of already positive persons. Of the 15, nine belong to Vehra at Bahmian and three each from Jagraon and Mansuran village.

ADC tests positive

Ferozepur: ADC (Development) Ravinder Pal Singh Sandhu was among six persons who tested positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday night. While there is still no clue on how the ADC got the infection, others were contacts of the senior railway official who tested positive last week. The official, identified as Senior DME Ram Kumar, died while undergoing treatment at the CMC, Ludhiana, two days ago. As many as 27 railway officials who were in contact with the deceased have also been home-quarantined.
