Malerkotla, August 24

The police claimed to have solved a blind murder case, which involved a woman whose body was found lying along a drain near Naushera village over three months ago. Antecedents and the exact address of the deceased, who had been staying in a live-in relationship with the main suspect, have not been ascertained yet.

The police said the suspects — Mandeep Singh Mani, his mother Ranjit Kaur Rani, Irfan alias Babbu, and Imran Khan Munnan of Naushera (Sadrabad) — were arrested from different places.

Though the police have not ascertained the exact sequence of events leading to the murder yet, they said there was an attempt to destroy the evidence. The police said preliminary investigations have revealed the victim’s insistence on marrying Mandeep Singh cost her life. The police said they have not recovered the weapon used in the crime and the equipment used to shift the body from the crime scene (the main suspect’s house) yet.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gagan Ajit Singh said coordinated efforts by the Amargarh police led by SHO Gurpreet Kaur and CIA Wing Mahorana led by Inspector Harjinder Singh had enabled the police to solve the murder case. He said the guardians of the woman have not been traced yet.

The Amargarh police recovered the body of a woman along the Naushera drain on May 22, when the police were busy making security arrangements for general election polling.

Having registered an FIR at the Amargarh police station on the fateful day, the police initiated a probe into the case that led to the identification and arrest of all four suspects.

Meanwhile, the Sandaur police claimed to have arrested two members of a gang involved in the illicit trade of drug trafficking. They said 1 kg of opium and a motorcycle used in crime were seized from the suspects, Mohammad Ayub of Kular village and Fakrudeen of Ramgarh Bhullaran in Ludhiana district.
