Chandigarh, July 11

Issuing notice of motion to the complainant on a petition by Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut for setting aside a criminal complaint against her, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed the trial court to adjourn the pending matter beyond September 8, the next date of hearing before the Bench here.

The direction by Justice Meenakshi I Mehta came on Kangana’s petition against complainant Mahinder Kaur. Her counsel Abhinav Sood with advocates Anmol Gupta, Nitesh Jhajhria, Jashan Mehta, Dhrun Chowfl and Abhuwrat Arya contended in the petition that none of the accusations, prima facie, established a case of defamation against her and the same was based on false and baseless allegations.

Besides this, the impugned complaint had been filed with an ulterior motive and was an outcome of political vendetta. Sood added complainant Mahinder Kaur in her complaint filed in January last year had alleged that Kangana wrote a defamatory tweet during the farmer protest wherein “false imputations and remarks” were made against her. She also filed a complaint before the court, seeking initiation of criminal proceedings for defamation against Kangana Ranaut as she had made false imputations. The court on the complaint had summoned Ranaut.
