The rebel AAP group led by Sukhpal Khaira on Tuesday constituted a five-member committee to resolve differences with the Harpal Cheema faction.

Cheema, Leader of Opposition, has welcomed the initiative and said he looked forward to a positive development on this front.

Cheema said he along with AAP state co-convener Dr Balbir Singh had already initiated peace efforts to unite the party and met some of the rebels and former leaders.

Khaira said the committee would hold discussions with other group to resolve differences over autonomy for the state unit and other matters.

The five members of the panel are MLAs Kanwar Sandhu, Nazar Singh Manshahia, Baldev Singh and Jagdev Singh and Suresh Sharma. “The talks will be based on the six resolutions passed at the volunteers’ convention in Bathinda on August 2,” he said.

Khaira, however, said despite announcements in the media, none of the seven MLAs with him had been approached by the other faction so far. He said they would hold a march from Kotkapura-Behbal Kalan-Bargari on October 7 to press the state government to act on the Justice Ranjit Singh Commission report. He said it was unfortunate that both the Congress and the SAD were holding counter rallies to divert public attention from sacrilege issue. “We appeal to the people to give both these parties a befitting reply,” he said.

Kanwar Sandhu released copies of the “open letter” that the AAP had written to Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh demanding a special Assembly session to discuss farm issues. Manshahia, who was a member of the Vidhan Sabha Committee on farmer suicides, rued that despite their painstaking work for more than six months, the report and 69 recommendations of the committee were not even discussed in the House. He said that the government should call a special session and present the action taken report on the recommendations.

NRI chapters revived

Kanwar Sandhu, party spokesman, said they had decided to revive all 43 NRI chapters of the party abroad. These chapters were disbanded by the overseas convener of the party a few weeks ago. Sandhu said the earlier decision of the party disbanding the chapters was taken without consulting them. “Since NRIs from Punjab had supported the party in every possible way in the past, the PAC decided to revive them. Wherever such chapters don’t exist, these would be constituted,” he said.
