The yesterday’s rain has played spoilsport for the Maghi Mela in Muktsar town. The mela ground and a number of streets in the town have become waterlogged. The situation is such that the team of Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh and Faridkot MP Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa has decided to change the venue of their January 14 rally from a vacant plot along the Bathinda-Kotkapura bypass to a wedding resort on the outskirts of town along the Bathinda road here.

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is holding its rally at its pet place, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) ground, along the Malout road here. The SAD (Amritsar) is holding its rally at Dera Bhai Mastan Singh here.

Talking to The Tribune, Faridkot MP Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa said, “Rain had waterlogged our rally venue, so we have changed the location to Green Sea Resorts near the SSP office along the Bathinda road. Now, we will hold the rally in its hall, so that there is no issue due to the change in weather.”

Meanwhile, Binder Goneana, general secretary, SAD, Muktsar district, said, “We are making the stage waterproof.”

Varinder Kapoor, who is organising the mela this year along the Malout road, said, “We have paid Rs 1.04 crore fee to the district administration for installing swings. The mela started on Saturday, but the rain waterlogged the ground. Now, there is hardly any arrangement to drain out the rainwater. The devotees mainly come to Muktsar on January 13, 14 and 15, but the mela ground is wet and slippery. We will suffer huge losses due to that.”

Meanwhile, some local residents said the rain had exposed the preparedness claims of the district administration. The local bus stand had also got waterlogged. Two polo matches were scheduled to be held at Lambi Dhabh village, but just one could be held due to the wet condition of the temporary ground.

Muktsar Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Tripathi visited the mela ground and other parts of the town and directed the officials concerned to drain out the rainwater and sewage so that devotees did not face any hassles.

He said two plays “Sirhind Di Deewar” and “Mai Tera Banda” would be performed on January 13 and 14 at Dera Bhai Mastan Singh Public School here.
