A mining officer and Sarhali police team, including an SHO, have been booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act for allegedly acting under political influence while dealing with an illegal mining case. A minister, too, is being named in the case who allegedly pressured the police to act according to his directions.

Cops ‘Pressured’

  • A minister, too, is being named in the case who allegedly pressurised the police to act according to his directions, saying that some of the accused were his workers
  • He allegedly told the police not to mention in the case a tipper and a Poclain machine seized from an illegal mining spot as their owners were his supporters

Those booked are Vikas Singla, Mining Officer; Sub Inspector Charan Singh, SHO, Sarhali; and his subordinate ASI Harjinder Singh.

Senior police officers said about 10 days back, the Mining Officer and the Sarhali police team conducted a raid in Chambal village and detected illegal mining in the fields of one Sukhwinder Singh Sukh.

The team seized a JCB Machine, three tractors, three earth-filled trailers, a Poclain machine and a tipper from the spot. The raiding party booked the farmer showing three tractors, three tractor-trailers and a JCB machine had been seized. The Poclain machine and tipper were not mentioned.

Senior police officers said as the matter came to the notice of the minister, he allegedly told the police not to mention tipper and the Poclain machine in the case as the owners of these machins were his supporters who helped him during the elections. The Mining Officer and the police party, acting under the influence of the Minister, followed his instruction.

When it came to the notice of seniors, the matter was investigated by Jagir Singh, DSP, PBI (Punjab Bureau of Investigation) and Special Crime, who detected the anomaly. SSP Ranjit Singh Dhillon said on the findings of the inquiry report of the DSP, the police officer and the Mining Officer had been booked.
