The identity of the body was confirmed through DNA testing following which the family members authenticated it. The Indira Gandhi Canal, which originates from Harike Headworks in Punjab and passes through Faridkot, ends in the Jaisalmer region of Rajasthan where the body was found at the canal’s tail-end.

According to Harnek Singh, father of the deceased, his son was allegedly involved in a relationship with a married woman. He alleged that the woman and two youths, who are close relatives, murdered his son, threw the body into the canal and took away his motorcycle.

Harnek claimed that his son’s motorcycle had been recovered a few days earlier from two youths by the police. These youths were arrested in a separate case for possessing an illegal weapon, and the motorcycle was taken into police custody. The Faridkot police later called the family to identify the vehicle, which was confirmed to belong to Kamaljit Singh.

Harnek reiterated that his son was murdered and demanded strict action against the accused persons, alleging a deliberate attempt to destroy evidence by dumping the body in the canal.

Confirming the development, Faridkot DSP Tarlochan Singh said that the police were investigating the matter from multiple angles. “We are awaiting the post-mortem examination report,” he said.
