MP Vikramjit Singh Sahney for law against superstitions

Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab Vikramjit Singh Sahney on Monday demanded a stringent legislation against superstitious practices, which lead to exploitation of people and are used to coerce religious conversions.

Speaking during the Zero Hour, Sahney said superstitions and black magic were prevalent in parts of North India to lure “innocent people” for religious conversion. “Fraudulent individuals prey upon innocent individuals by misguiding them with the false claim of supernatural abilities and lure them for conversion,” he said.

Sahney said the Maharashtra Government had set an example by passing a legislation against black magic and superstitions, making it a punishable offence. He urged the Centre to criminalise the “sinister practices” of superstition, which led to religious conversion.
