The Centre on Monday said that no scheduled flights were currently operating from the Halwara airport in Ludhiana, even as it reiterated that airlines were free to decide routes and expand services, based on commercial viability.

Replying to unstarred questions in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said the Halwara airport had been developed through a joint venture between the Punjab Government and the Airports Authority of India, and the development work at the airport had already been completed.

However, the minister informed the House that there were currently no scheduled flight operations from the airport.

The statement came in response to a query by Rajya Sabha member Rajinder Gupta, who sought details about the number of flights operating from the Halwara airport, routes and airlines involved and steps being taken by the government to improve connectivity from the facility to major cities across the country.
