Sangrur, February 5

Accusing Sunam SDM Manjit Kaur of rejecting the nomination paper of their ward number 14 candidate without any valid reasons, AAP MLA Aman Arora along with his supporters staged a protest from Thursday evening to Friday evening.

HOW EVENTS UNFOLDED

  • Sunam AAP MLA alleged that some goons kidnapped ward No. 14 candidate Pawan Baba from the SDM office on Tuesday
  • Covering candidate filed the papers, but the SDM rejected it to ‘facitate the Congress win’

  • The MLA complained to the police, sought a kidnapping case

  • Accusing the MLA of using derogatory language against the SDM, Cong leaders sought FIR

Demanding the registration of an FIR against the MLA, Congress workers led by local halqa in-charge Daman Thind Bajwa also protested in front of the DSP office on Thursday night and alleged that Arora had used derogatory language against the SDM.

“On Tuesday, some goons kidnapped ward number 14 candidate Pawan Baba from the SDM office. When our candidate failed to reach office within time, I got the nomination of covering candidate Harwinder Singh Namdhari filed. But on Thursday, the SDM rejected Namdhari’s nomination to facilitate the victory of the Congress candidate unopposed. We will restart the protest if need arises,” Arora said.

Analysing video

I am analysing the MLA’s video and will take appropriate action against him. Manjit Kaur, Sunam SDM

When asked about allegations about the use of derogatory language against the SDM, Arora said she had rejected the nomination of their candidate at the behest of Congress leaders and he stands by his statement.

Other AAP MLAs led by Leader of Opposition Harpal Singh Cheema also joined the protest on Friday. “The Congress has been trying to win the elections by unfair means. But we will not allow it. We are gaining strength as more and more people are joining our party. Today, some employee union leaders have also joined our party at Sangrur,” Cheema said.

Bajwa, however, said: “We have submitted our complaint and if the police fail to register the FIR against the MLA for using derogatory language, we will restart the protest.”

When contacted, Sunam SDM Manjit Kaur said she was analysing the MLA’s video and would take appropriate action against him.

Sunam DSP Baljinder Singh said both the Congress and the MLA have given their complaints. “The MLA has given a complaint for the registration of case against miscreants involved in the kidnapping of their candidate, while Congress leaders want an FIR against Arora. We are conducting inquiries into both the complaints,” the DSP added.
