Chandigarh, June 21

Within 24 hours of his arrest in a corruption case, Punjab IAS officer Sanjay Popli is in for more trouble with a fresh FIR lodged against him under the Arms Act. Another complaint alleging he demanded commission in a government project has been received against him.

Vigilance Bureau officials found unaccounted live cartridges from his house during searches today. They found 73 bullets (41 of 7.65 bore, 30 of .22 bore and two of .32 bore) from his house. “A case under the Arms Act was registered at the Sector 11 police station, Chandigarh”. Sources, however, say Popli doesn’t own any licensed weapon.

Sources in the Vigilance said a contractor from Abohar had complained on the state government’s anti-corruption helpline that the IAS officer took 1 per cent cut from him for a water supply and sewerage project.

The inquiry into the fresh complaint would be part of the probe regarding the FIR against the IAS officer lodged last evening. Popli was arrested late last evening on the basis of a complaint by Sanjay Kumar of Karnal that he demanded 1 per cent commission for clearing a tender for a Rs 7.30-crore sewerage project in Nawanshahr.
