Sangrur, March 17

The failure of the senior police authorities in sending similar number of inspectors and sub-inspectors (SIs) to Sangrur as transferred out has brought down the number of both rank officers in the district.

According to sources, in the recent reshuffle 15 inspectors were transferred from here to other districts, but it got only eight, thus bringing down the number of inspectors from earlier 31 to 24. Similarly, 45 SIs were transferred out to other districts, but Sangrur has got only 15, bringing SIs number from 84 to 54.

A perusal of records shows that at present only nine police stations of the total 22 have inspectors posted as SHOs who have been working in the district for the last more than eight months, but the remaining 13 police stations have new inspectors transferred recently.

“Smugglers from Haryana always try to smuggle liquor to Sangrur through the porous border and the lack of required force always creates a problem. I request the Election Commission of Punjab to provide extra force to the district for effective sealing of the border,” said Harpal Singh Cheema, Leader of the Opposition.

Figures of the pending cases show that till December 31, 2018, total 3,025 applications for various requests were pending with the Sangrur police. But after the start of the weekly complaint redress camp system by SSP Dr Sandeep Garg, the police have disposed of total 1,700 applications since January 1. Apart from investigations, at present the Sangrur police have put up 27 check posts at various points to thwart smuggling from Haryana.
