JALANDHAR: Unfurling the Tricolour during the state-level Independence Day function here on Thursday, Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh warned inimical forces against any attempt to destroy the peace in the country.

Unfurling the Tricolour during the state-level Independence Day function here on Thursday, Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh warned inimical forces against any attempt to destroy the peace in the country.

Addressing a gathering at Guru Gobind Singh Stadium here, Capt Amarinder said, “Let us dedicate ourselves to work collectively to build a strong and prosperous Punjab and to cement the bond of love, peace and amity.” Highlighting the contribution of Punjabis towards the freedom struggle, the Chief Minister said it was now our collective duty to preserve the hard-earned freedom attained through countless sacrifices.

The Chief Minister said 2019 was a historic year in view of the 550th Parkash Purb of Guru Nanak, 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and Jallianwala Bagh centenary being commemorated with great enthusiasm and fervour. 

Capt Amarinder took the salute during an impressive march past by contingents of the ITBP, Punjab Police, Rajasthan Police, Chandigarh Police, Guardians of Governance, Punjab Home Guards, NCC and PAP pipe and brass band, pipe band of 6 Sikh Li and the CRPF, led by the parade commander DSP Gursher Singh.

The Chief Minister conferred state awards to 21 eminent personalities for their outstanding contribution towards various fields. These awardees included social activists, artistes, litterateurs, poets, progressive farmers, environmentalists and government officials, besides a cancer specialist.

The CM presented certificates and cash rewards to them. They included Dr Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal of Duneke village (Moga), Lieut Col Bishan Dass (retd) Patiala, Rakesh Kumar Garg, president of Munde Ahmedgarh De Welfare Club, Amandeep Singh of Kanpur village (Pathankot), Tarsem Chand Semy Mansa, Pandit Manu Seen Jalandhar, Jinder Singh Sandhua village (Ropar), Harsh Kumar Harsh Patiala, Abhishek Kumar Chauhan Rajpura, Dr Vishal Goyal, computer expert from Punjabi University, Patiala, Punjabi writer Gurmeet Singh Singhal, Dr Devinder Singh Sandhu, cancer specialist from Ludhiana, Rajesh Kumar Bhagat Jalandhar, Baba Sewa Singh Khadoor Sahib, Sameer Sharda Pathankot, Lalit Mohan Pathak Nawanshahr, Gunbir Singh Amritsar and Amandeep Singh, Veterinary Inspector, from Patiala.

Other recipients of state award are Sita Rani, sarpanch of Haripur village (Jalandhar), Harpreet Singh Dhillon Fatehgarh Sahib and Kuldeep Singh Nayagaon (Mohali).
