Expelled Akali leader Sewa Singh Sekhwan on Sunday launched a campaign in Jalalabad constituency, represented by SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, to revive the “real” Akali Dal. He honoured 52 former Akali leaders from Jalalabad who had left the party recently.

The programme was organised at the residence of former Market Committee chairman, Arniwala block, Jathedar Charan Singh, at Kandhwala Hazarkhan village.

Charan Singh, who remained president of the SAD Fazilka circle (rural) for 32 years, and about five dozen Akalis had resigned from the primary membership of the party last week.

Estranged Akali MP from Ferozepur Sher Singh Ghubaya was among those present. Ghubaya said he was expected to attend programmes in his constituency.

Sekhwan said sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib could not be tolerated and he was ready to pay any price to maintain the sanctity of the holy book.

The former minister said he was against the policies of Sukhbir and the latter’s brother-in-law Bikram Singh Majithia, who had failed to run the party. Meanwhile, Charan Singh claimed that rebel AAP leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira had called him up and wished to meet them in the near future.

He said the course of action would be discussed with Khaira soon. Charan Singh also claimed that AAP MLA from Jaito Baldev Singh had met him at his residence on Saturday.
