Patiala, March 14
The district police on Thursday seized Rs 92.50 lakh in unaccounted cash from a Sangrur resident following a tip-off.
SSP Mandeep Sidhu said a Sangrur resident was intercepted while he was travelling in a car on Wednesday night.
This is one of the biggest hauls of cash since the election code of conduct came into force. Sidhu said income tax officials had been sounded and a two-member police team was also trying to verify the claims by the person from whom it was recovered.
The police said the Patran police intercepted a Hyundai Creta car and following a search, they found the cash. “A 20-year old B.Com student along with his driver were carrying the money that was brought from Delhi,” he said.
They were taken to the police station for questioning, but after their vague replies, officials of the Enforcement Directorate and Income-Tax Department were called to ascertain the source of cash.
Mandeep Singh Sindhu, SSP, Patiala, said, “We found that the cash was brought from Delhi as there is marking from where it was withdrawn. The cash was to be delivered in Sangrur. The youth has claimed that his father is an industrialist. We are investigating,” Sidhu added. — TNS
