Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday stressed the need for a strict performance-linked framework for the elevation of district presidents in Punjab, saying their rise in the party could “exceed expectations if backed by consistent show”.

Interacting with district presidents from Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir on the concluding day of a 10-day training camp in Kangra under the party’s Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan, Rahul said organisational growth would depend on measurable work on the ground.

According to a senior party leader, he told participants that their rise in the party could exceed expectations if backed by consistent performance.

Placing district presidents at the centre of the organisational overhaul, Rahul, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, advised them to remain connected with voters and be responsive to local concerns.

He said the leaders who build a strong base through sustained effort would carve their own space, irrespective of proximity to senior leadership.

Among those present on the occasion were All-India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in-charge for Punjab Bhupesh Baghel, state unit president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring and Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly Partap Singh Bajwa.

50-day padyatra

Party sources said the Punjab unit was planning a 50-day padyatra around September focusing on law and order issues in the state.

In addition, district presidents have been tasked with organising yatras and protests in their respective constituencies, while also training block-level leaders to ensure a coordinated approach down the organisational ladder.

As part of a newly introduced evaluation system, office-bearers will be required to upload photographs and detailed reports of their activities through a dedicated digital application.

The central leadership will monitor this real-time documentation to assess performance and determine future responsibilities.
