Police crack down on drug peddlers in Abohar

A day after MLA Sandeep Jakhar highlighted The Tribune report “Drug whistle-blower assaulted in Abohar” on his social media platform, tagging Punjab Chief Minister and DGP, the City-1 police launched a crackdown in Indira Nagari here.

The police had arrested only one accused, Gurjit Singh Giani, in the assault on social activist Krishan, alias Dara Grover, in this case. The others were at large.

Jakhar yesterday met Superintendent of Police Ashwant Singh, along with women from Indira Nagari, to apprise him of drug peddlers’ nefarious activities.

The City-1 police launched a special campaign over the persistent complaints of drug trafficking. This operation commenced late Thursday evening and continued till Friday morning.

Inspector Maninder Singh, ASI Sukhdev Singh and Seed Farm Chowki in-charge Bhupinder Singh led patrols from 10 pm onwards in Indira Nagri, Krishna Nagri, Kalyan Bhumi Road and Sabzi Mandi Chowk.

Youths found loitering and causing disturbance in these areas were apprehended. They were identified as Charanjit Singh, Shamsher Singh, Nanak Virk, Kulwinder Singh Kindu, Sukhwinder Singh, Sukhraj Singh, all residents of Indira Nagri; Amarjit Singh, a resident of Chandigarh Mohalla; and Sandeep Singh, a resident of Seed Farm. Cases have been registered against them under Sections 128/170 of the BNS.

During the raids in Indira Nagari, the police also seized several motorcycles parked outside homes that lacked number plates. The police said these vehicles are suspected of being used in multiple illegal activities.

This police action has caused a stir throughout the entire area. Councillor Punit Arora Sonu said that the lives of the residents had been affected for a long time due to drug traffickers, forcing them to live in an atmosphere of fear. He expressed confidence that such decisive steps would lead to a reduction in drug trafficking and other criminal incidents.
