Lok Insaaf Party leader Balwinder Bains on Friday opposed the proposed of hike in salary of MLAs in Punjab.

The proposal was put up at a committee meeting before the Vidhan Sabha. He staged a walkout in protest.

The MLA said how was it that the government was increasing the salaries of the MLAs when they don’t have the money to pay their employees.

SAD leaders have also criticised the proposal to hike the salary, with Sukhbir Badal saying that “he was against the pay hike of the MLAs and it was a stupid move by the Congress”.

Bikram Singh Majithia said the government should look into farmers’ distress and employment to youth issues, rather than deciding to hike the MLAs pay.

The Punjab Assembly session had started on Thursday with obituary references.

Initially proposed as a three-day Winter Session, the treasury benches in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha are learnt to have argued at the Business Advisory Council meeting that since there was no business that needed to be discussed, the length of the session be curtailed by a day and the sittings reduced to two.
