Chandigarh, February 17

In a crackdown across the state on school buses violating safety norms, the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) today issued 1,649 challans and impounded 253 vehicles.

The action was taken in the wake of the fire tragedy in which four children were charred to death in the ramshackled school van in Longowal on Saturday.

The Sangrur RTA impounded 15 buses and issued challans to five buses in the Lehra and Moonak areas of Sangrur. The Barnala district authorities impounded six buses and challaned 20 buses while the Ropar authorities issued 160 challans and impounded 30 vehicles for not adhering to the safety norms. The Patiala administration issued over 100 challans.
