Punjab institutes shine in youth parliamentary competition

NEW DELHI: DAV College, Jalandhar, on Thursday won the 14th National Youth Parliamentary Competition, 2017-18, which was organised by the Ministry for Parliamentary Affairs.

DAV College, Jalandhar, on Thursday won the 14th National Youth Parliamentary Competition, 2017-18, which was organised by the Ministry for Parliamentary Affairs.

It won the Parliamentary Shield and Trophy, a national component of the competition. DAV College enacted a short sitting of Youth Parliament ( mock Parliament) during the event.

A full fledged drill on parliamentary proceedings including No-Confidence Motion was  played out by the schools students on the occasion.

As many as 74 institutions competed for the top award.

Besides, Central University of Punjab,  Bhatinda, Rajiv Gandhi National University of law, Patiala, were among 14 universities/colleges which were awarded merit trophies for standing first in their respective groups.

University of Jammu, and Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, New Delhi, were other institutes awarded under the Merit trophies.

The competition started in 1997-98 and under Youth  Parliament Scheme of  the Ministry. The scheme aims at acquainting the young generation with the practice and procedures of Parliament, techniques of discussion and debate, besides developing leadership qualities.

Addressing the students, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Meghwal gave important nuances of manners and etiquettes of  members and conduct of business in the Parliament, quoting from actual instances of important parliamentary debates, including that of former Prime Minister Atal Bihar Vajpayee.
