The Punjab government on Monday undertook before the Punjab and Haryana High Court that it would not go ahead with the MBBS and BDS counselling to be held by the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences.

The undertaking before the Division Bench of Justice Daya Chaudhary and Justice Sudhir Mittal on a bunch of petitions filed against the State of Punjab and other respondents by Rimnaaz and other petitioners through counsel Kannan Malik. The matter was argued before the bench by senior counsel D.S. Patwalia.

The petitioners had sought issuance of directions for quashing clause in a notification dated June 6 as 1 per cent reservation provided for children/grandchildren of terrorism-affected persons had not been extended to private medical/dental colleges and universities in Punjab.

Patwalia contended the action was completely violative of Article 14 and 16 of the Constitution of India as well as provisions of Punjab Private Health Sciences Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admission, Fixation of Fee and Making of Reservation) Act, 2006 and judgment dated August 23, 2018 passed by a Division Bench.

In the other petition, directions were sought for quashing two clauses as only 1 per cent reservation had been provided in MBBS/BDS to sportspersons category in complete violation of the sports policy, which mandated 3 per cent reservation.
