After 11 years, the Punjab Government has finally increased the stipend of resident doctors in the state. The stipend has been hiked by around Rs 17,000.

From the existing Rs 51,000 in the case of junior residents and Rs 65,000 in the case of senior residents, they will now get a stipend of Rs 67,968 and Rs 81,562, respectively.

Barring Himachal Pradesh, the stipend of Punjab resident doctors was the lowest in the region. The stipend disparity between resident doctors of Punjab and their counterparts in neighbouring states had been highlighted in these columns several times. After the hike, resident doctors of the state would be getting more stipend than those of neighbouring states, such as Rajasthan. However, Haryana, New Delhi and Chandigarh are still better placed when it comes to the monthly salary of resident doctors.

Members of the Union of Resident Doctors of Punjab said: “We hail the government’s decision on stipend hike after a long battle by resident doctors over the years.”

Was among the lowest in region
