In a stark contrast to his public perception of being an accused in the Air India Flight 182 bombing case, Ripudaman Singh Malik (75) was recognised as a philanthropist who remained attached to his roots in spite of settling abroad. He continued to patronise several social initiatives in this border district.

Born and brought up at his ancestral house situated on the Jhoke road here, Ripudaman moved to Canada five decades ago. There, he started working as a cab driver. Later, he founded the Khalsa Credit Union and established a public school, which is now the largest private school in British Columbia.

Ripudaman, along with his brother Jasjit Singh Malik, had reportedly last visited the border town in May.

During his visit, he initiated the construction of an old-age home at his ancestral home here. Khalsa Gurdwara president Satinderjit Singh said Ripudaman’s family had always been involved in philanthropist activities in the city.

“In 1997, Ripudaman had donated four acres for a school. He also donated funds for the project,” he said. Cantonment Board former member Zora Singh said Ripudaman had dedicated his life to promoting Guru Nanak Dev’s teachings.
