The SAD-BJP alliance has demanded a judicial inquiry by a sitting judge of the High Court into the Amritsar train mishap, calling it a “man-made tragedy of unprecedented magnitude”. A delegation of the alliance, led by Akali Dal patron Parkash Singh Badal, party president Sukhbir Singh Badal and state BJP chief Shwait Malik, on Tuesday met Governor VP Singh Badnore and urged him to order a judicial probe into the incident.

Accusing the Congress of being “non-serious and trying to shield” its minister, Navjot Singh Sidhu, and his wife, the former CM said the magisterial probe and the police inquiry were aimed at absolving those responsible for the tragedy. “The FIR has been registered against unknown persons, even though it is clear that the organisers as well as Sidhu and his wife knew that people were standing on the tracks and they did nothing to make the crowds move away,” he said. He said it was unfortunate that the CM“deserted” the state in their hour of grief.
