Sangrur, March 24
The Dhuri administration on Sunday issued notices to cane growers for violating norms by starting indefinite protests at two places without permission.
Harjeet Singh, a member of the cane growers’ committee, said, “We are prepared to face anything to get our payment released. We will not lift our dharna till then.”
He added the notices had caused more resentment among the protesters. “After we received notices, we decided to intensify our agitation,” he said.
In Dhuri, two protests have been going on for the release of the Rs 80-crore dues of cane growers.
The cane growers along with their family members have been protesting since March 7. Dr Anwar Bhasaur, an AAP leader, said, “Cane growers are only seeking the release of their dues but strangely, officers are troubling them more by issuing notices to them.”
Dhuri SDM Satwant Singh said, “We have issued notices to 12 persons for starting protests without permission.”
