Panel chief offered to Step down month ago
A month ago, four-time SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami had offered to step down on “moral grounds” following a reaction of former Jathedar of Akal Takht Giani Raghbir Singh on social media while criticising the manner in which Giani Harpreet Singh was sacked as Jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib.
Though Dhami had declined to withdraw his resignation, he had also hinted that he may ‘reconsider’ his decision.

Dhami had also offered to quit the seven-member committee appointed by the Akal Takht to oversee the membership drive of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
In the last executive meeting on March 7, the decision on Dhami’s resignation was kept pending whereas the services of Giani Raghbir Singh and Giani Sultan Singh were terminated as Jathedars of Akal Takht and Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, respectively. Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj was appointed the Jathedar of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib with an additional officiating charge of the Akal Takht.
“During the last meeting, the sacking of Jathedars and the new appointment in their place were never on the agenda sent to us. This time, we may see a surprise in Dhami’s case,” said a member of the executive body, preferring anonymity.
