Day after Modi-Sukhbir meet, Akali Dal seeks immediate implementation of women's reservation Bill
The party draws inspiration from teachings of the Sikh Gurus, who championed dignity, equality and equal rights of women, wrote the SAD chief in a post on X
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) demanded the immediate implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the country.
Besides, the SAD also demanded fair and equitable delimitation to ensure equal representation to all states.
The development took place a day after a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal was held in Delhi.
A day after meeting the Prime Minister, Badal met his senior party colleagues in Chandigarh on Saturday.
Badal has so far remained tight-lipped and did not share details of the meeting with the PM, which has fuelled speculation of alliance talks between both the political parties, who were alliance partners until six years ago.
In a statement, issued this evening, the SAD said that it draws inspiration from the teachings of the Sikh Gurus, who championed the dignity, equality and equal rights of women. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), Amritsar, has already set an example by providing for women’s reservation in its House.
“After detailed deliberations on key issues before Parliament, the SAD also demanded a fair and equitable delimitation that ensures equal representation to all states,” the statement said.
The SAD supported the proposal put forward by the Government of India on the floor of the house for a uniform increase of 50 per cent in the number of seats in all states. The party emphasised that women reservation and delimitation should be done immediately.
The senior leaders attending the meeting included Gulzar Singh Ranike, Sikander Singh Maluka, Balwinder Singh Bhunder, Dr Daljit Singh Cheema, Maheshinder Singh Grewal, and MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Kewal Singh Dhillon and the state general secretary (organisation) Manthri Srinivasulu, have been summoned to Delhi by party president Nitin Nabin.
The BJP spokesperson Vineet Joshi maintained that the leaders had not been summoned and that it was a follow-up meeting to discuss the strategy for the 2027 assembly elections.
He also slammed speculations that both the leaders had been summoned to discuss the issue of infighting in the state BJP unit.
Punjab BJP has witnessed differences among senior leaders, with veterans such as former minister Tikshan Sud openly expressing dissatisfaction with the current state leadership.
While Dhillon and Srinivasulu were not available for comments, Joshi maintained that he was not aware that both leaders have been summoned for a discussion on “possible” alliance talks.
“So far, we have been given clear instructions that the BJP is going to fight on all 117 seats, and any further decision in this regard will be taken by the top leadership in Delhi,” said Joshi.
Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon had also said the BJP would fight the 2027 Assembly elections on its own across all 117 seats. Sukhbir Badal has likewise maintained that his party is preparing to contest all 117 Assembly constituencies.
