Phagwara, June 24

A Punjab Police team had to face gunshots when they were out to nab a wanted hardcore criminal, who was reportedly spotted around Maheru village of Phagwara around 11.30pm on Thursday. Several rounds of firing were exchanged between the gangster and the police.

Phagwara SP Harinderpal Singh Parmar said the police control room received an alert  around 9pm on Thursday about a gangster, Rajan, and police checkpoints were sounded. DSP AR Sharma was heading the police parties.

Kapurthala SSP Raj Bachan Singh Sandhu said the district police were in search of Rajan, a resident of Ahmedpur village, wanted for the murder of a cab driver.

Sandhu said a police team headed by DSP AR Sharma was deputed, who along with Sub Inspector Sukhwinder Singh, tried to stop a Toyota Etios car on Thurday night. The car was being driven by accused Rajan, who fired four to five rounds on the police. In retaliation, DSP Sharma fired three rounds from his 9 mm pistol and Sub Inspector Sukhwinder Singh fired from his .38 bore rifle.

DSP Sharma said during the exchange of fire, the accused managed to flee in his car. The police have registered a case under Section 307 of the IPC and the Arms Act.

The SSP said Rajan had hired a car from Hoshiarpur and murdered its driver near Kapurthala on June 18. He was wanted by the Kapurthala police in a case of murder under Sections 302, 201 and 34 of the IPC. A high alert has been sounded in all neighbouring districts, said SSP Sandhu.
