Inspector General of Police (IGP) Paramraj Singh Umranangal was sent to four-day police remand on Tuesday. A day after arresting him from Chandigarh, the SIT of the Punjab Police, probing the firing incidents at Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan, produced the IGP before Judicial Magistrate Ekta Uppal here today.

The prosecution on the behalf of SIT demanded 10-day police remand of Umranangal, claiming the SIT wanted to probe the mobile phone call details which the IGP had made to the then DGP and Chief Minister’s office on the day of the firing, October 14, 2015. However, the court gave only four days police custody of Umranangal.

Umranangal was brought to the Sadar police station Faridkot on Monday. After he spent over 17 hours in the lockup in Faridkot, he was produced before the JMIC at 2 pm on Tuesday.

While a battery of advocates for IGP Umranangal opposed his police custody, alleging he was being framed in a three-year-old case for political reasons, the prosecution claimed that the evidence collected by the SIT revealed that the IGP had long-duration frequent telephonic conversation with the DGP and the CM’s Office on October 14, 2015, before opening of the firing at Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan.
