Muktsar: A Superintendent of Police (SP) was quick to do damage control after his subordinate, a Sub-Inspector (SI), threatened to resign and lodge a complaint against him. A day after the SI alleged that the SP used abusive language and hurt his religious sentiments in front of other policemen, the senior cop called him to his office and buried the hatchet. The SP then called up mediapersons, saying that there was some issue, which had been resolved.

Cong leaders keep off Dr Sidhu

Chandigarh: After the Amritsar train tragedy, most Congress leaders have distanced themselves from the controversy surrounding former MLA Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu, wife of Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu. They said when Dr Sidhu had made uncharitable remarks about the Congress government’s performance recently, Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh and others had stated that she held no position in the party. The same logic is applicable now, a senior leader quipped. The Sidhus, both former BJP leaders, had joined the Congress ahead of the 2017 Assembly elections.

Army cyclists pay homage to martyrs

Ferozepur: In an endeavour to motivate the youth to join the Army, a group of cyclists from the Punjab Regimental Centre arrived at the National Martyrs’ Memorial, Hussainiwala, recently. They had started their journey from Ramgarh (Jharkhand) on September 27. Led by Lt Ayush Saran, the cyclists covered 1,600 km to reach this border town, where they paid tributes to the martyrs. Naik Amar said, “It is a privilege to be part of this initiative to make people aware of the Army’s glorious tradition.”

Cashing in on crop residue

Fatehgarh Sahib: Most of the state’s farmers claim that they have no option but to burn crop residue, but a progressive farmer has a different take. Harpreet Singh Gill of Haripur village in the district is an exporter of potatoes, musk melons and watermelons. He says residue will become the main source of income for farmers in the future. With the help of a rotavator and a mulcher, he ploughs residue back into his 110-acre fields, resulting in a 15-20 quintal higher yield. After paddy, he sows potatoes, followed by watermelons and musk melons, and then ‘moongi’.

Rowing bug in border belt

Ferozepur: Settled along the banks of the Sutlej in this border belt, local youths have developed a keen interest in rowing. Recently, Amandeep Singh of Bhanwala village and his team members won the gold medal in the Junior National Rowing Championship in Bhopal. Congress MLA Parminder Singh Pinki honoured the youth for his achievement. Pinki said he would take up the matter of setting up a rowing academy in the area.
