Sultanpur Lodhi, October 22

Three-day Ekonkar Water Sports Championship, one of the most awaited events ahead of the 550th Parkash Purb of Guru Nanak, kicked off today at the holy Bein in Sultanpur Lodhi. Players from across the country reached here to participate in various categories of kayaking and canoeing tournaments.

On the first day of the sports event, both men and women participated in kayaking, canoe polo and dragon sprint. The event is being organised by the India Kayaking Canoeing Association and Punjab Amateur Kayaking Canoeing Association. Under the supervision of Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, players were given free of cost accommodation facility. However, contrary to expectation of participation of around 1,000 players from 25 states, only 400-500 players from eight states and two union territories showed up at the tournament.

Amandeep Singh Khaira, coach at the Sultanpur Lodhi water sports centre said, the teams had arrived from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Assam, Haryana, HP, UP, MP, Chandigarh and Delhi. — TNS
