Ludhiana, February 26

Tuberculosis patients across the state have failed to receive the money for nutritional support given to them every month. State has nearly 57,000 patients suffering from TB with nearly 10,000 patients, the highest from Ludhiana and the discontinuation of National Health Mission funds by the Union Government has casted its shadow on the TB patients as well.

The Union Health Ministry halted funds amounting to Rs 395 crore to Punjab under the National Health Mission (NHM) in the financial year 2023-24 for branding Ayushman Bharat Centres as Aam Aadmi Clinics.

The Central Government gives Rs 500 as social support fund keeping in view the role of nutrition in curing any disease. The money is given under Nikshay Poshan Yojana. The amount is directly transferred into the beneficiary’s account.

Inder Kumar, a TB patient from Ludhiana said in the first stance the amount they got was merger and secondly they were not getting it every month. “Initially it was credited once in two months and then it was credited twice a year which too had stopped now,” he said.

Dr Ashish Chawla, Ludhiana District TB Officer said that patients have not received funds since June 2022. “Funds use to come twice a year but stopped coming after NHM funds were discontinued by the Union Government,” said Dr Chawla.

Another patient said she used to buy milk and fruits from the amount given to her. “I have been asking doctors every time I visit hospital, but even they are not sure when the money will be credited into my account,” she added.

Suspended over changed branding
