The Amritsar Rural police have arrested three youths for their alleged involvement in a grenade attack on the Bhindi Saidan police station. The three were allegedly acting at the behest of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence-backed Khalistan Liberation Army, which had taken the responsibility of the incident.

The attack took place around midnight on March 30 at the police station, located about 3 km from the Indo-Pak border. No police personnel were injured in the incident.

Though the police officials were tight-lipped over the development, the accused were produced in the Ajnala sub-divisional court and sent to police remand for further interrogation.

The accused went underground immediately after the attack. Police teams launched an intensive probe, scrutinising CCTV footage from multiple cameras installed in and around the area which helped the police to trace the accused and the bikes used in the crime.

The accused managed to evade initial arrest and went into hiding, but sustained efforts by multiple police teams led to their eventual arrest. The police also impounded the two motorcycles used in the crime.

The breakthrough came when investigators first detained a youth who had recorded and circulated a video of the grenade attack. Examination of his mobile phone yielded crucial evidence, including the original footage. His interrogation subsequently led to the arrest of the two motorcycle-borne assailants directly involved in hurling the grenade.

Authorities are now probing the wider network to uncover any other operatives involved and further investigation is underway.
