Cabinet Minister Vijay Inder Singla along with former CM Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and other senior officers today handed over a cheque for Rs 6 lakh to the family of Jagmale Singh, who died on Saturday after being brutally assaulted allegedly by upper caste men at Changaliwala village.

The body was consigned to flames amid slogans by members of Zameen Prapati Sangharash Committee (ZPSC). Though the state government has accepted the demands of the protesters, the relatives and family members are apprehensive.

“The government usually backtracks from its promise after some days of such incidents. We request the government to fulfil all demands at the earliest,” said Karnvir Singh (14), deceased’s son.

Singla along with Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori, SSP Sandeep Garg and other officers gave an assurance to the family. Singla said, “We have handed over a cheque for Rs 6 lakh to them today and the cheque for remaining amount of Rs 14 lakh would be given on the day of bhog. We will fulfil the demands we have agreed to.”

Leader of Opposition (LoP) Harpal Singh Cheema said he would write to Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh for action against cops and doctors, who delayed the registration of an FIR and treatment of the deceased, respectively.

“It is confirmed that the FIR was not registered immediately after the incident and the victim also did not get the required treatment. I will seek strict action against the erring cops and doctors,” said Cheema.

ZPSC chief Mukesh Malaud and representatives of other organisations said they would keep meeting senior officers till the fulfillment of all demands, which included filing of chargesheet within a week, punishment to the accused in three months, inquiry by an ADGP-rank officer to probe alleged negligence by cops, Rs 20 lakh compensation, Rs 1.25 lakh for repair of family’s house, six-month ration to the family, all expense of bhog, free education to all three children and a government job deceased’s wife Manjit Kaur.
