The Punjab Government has initiated the process of ward reservation for municipal councils and nagar panchayats, with the Local Government Department issuing a formal notification for 33 such bodies.

The notification, issued under the Punjab Municipal Act, 1911, and the Municipalities Rules, 1994, categorises wards into general, women, Scheduled Caste (SC), SC women and Backward Classes (BC) segments to ensure adequate representation.

Sources said the move comes as the five-year term of several civic bodies was nearing its end and the government had already appointed administrators for nine municipal corporations and over 100 municipal councils/nagar panchayats to ensure smooth transition.
