Who was Ramandeep Kaur Maan, Punjabi-origin jail officer killed while transferring prisoner in Canada

Ramandeep Kaur Maan, a young woman from Gudhe village in Ludhiana, had moved to Canada as an international student and joined the country’s correctional service just six months ago. She was killed along with a fellow officer and an inmate in a road crash in Alberta.

For Ramandeep Kaur Maan, Canada was a place where she had built hopes of a new life. The young woman from Gudhe village in Ludhiana district, Punjab, had travelled to Canada as an international student, completed her studies in Manitoba and later moved to Edmonton.

That journey came to a tragic end in rural Alberta when the Correctional Service of Canada vehicle in which she was travelling while transferring an inmate collided with a box truck.

Maan, 25, was among three people killed in the crash. Her fellow correctional officer Nicolae (Nick) Serban and inmate Kiara Mooswa also died at the scene.

According to information shared by members of the South Asian community, Maan had been living in Edmonton for about a year and had joined the Correctional Service of Canada around six months before the fatal accident. She was posted at the Edmonton Institution for Women.

Police said the correctional vehicle collided with a box truck at an intersection about 200 km southeast of Edmonton. The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries, while all three occupants of the correctional vehicle died.

The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The tragedy has resonated deeply with the Punjabi and diaspora, particularly in Punjab, where Maan's roots were in Ludhiana.

The Commissioner of the Correctional Service of Canada paid tribute to Maan and Serban, saying they “tragically lost their lives” while carrying out their duties in service of Canada.

The Commissioner praised their “commitment to public safety, professionalism, and dedication to their work” and extended condolences to their families, friends and colleagues.

For Maan's family and community back home, a journey that began with the promise of a future abroad has ended in heartbreaking loss.
