Chandigarh, June 28

The “controversial” stay of UP strongman Mukhtar Ansari in Ropar jail for over two years will be thoroughly probed by the AAP government. An FIR will also be registered against those who facilitated his stay.

File with CM Mann

Sources in the government said the file, seeking registration of an FIR in this regard, had already been sent by Minister for Jails Harjot Singh Bains to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for approval.

The file mentions that no challan was presented in the court for the FIR registered against the strongman in Ropar. Also, Ansari never applied for bail. It was only after the SC order that he was sent back to UP .

This statement was made by Minister for Jails Harjot Singh Bains during the debate on the Budget here today. “Is it not strange that the person is brought here on an FIR, which is fake? This was done at a time when he faced trial in other cases in Uttar Pradesh. This FIR was registered in 2019 so that he could live comfortably in Punjab. He lived alone in a barrack meant for 25 persons. He got all kinds of VIP treatment and his wife, who was staying in Ropar, would come and stay with him in the jail for the entire day,” Bains told the House.

Bains further said the government would now investigate on whose instructions he was brought to Ropar jail. “We will also investigate how a case of extortion was registered against him here. During that time, the UP Police sent 20 production warrants to Punjab to secure his custody, but they were denied his custody as the state government would say that he was unwell. Finally, the UP Police filed a writ in the Supreme Court to seek his custody. The state government hired a high profile lawyer to defend him. The lawyer has raised a bill of Rs 55 lakh,” he told the House, adding the money that should have been spent on development was thus wasted to protect Ansari.
