Patiala, January 25

Around 24 hours before Education Minister Vijay Inder Singla is about to unfurl the National Flag during the Republic Day celebrations tomorrow, the District Education Department at the eleventh hour asked schoolteachers, including principals, to remain present at the event. The district-level Republic Day function will be organised at the Polo Ground here.

In fact, the District Education Department issued a letter in this regard on Saturday morning.

The order reads: “As the Education Minister will unfurl the National Flag on Republic Day and address the public, teachers are directed to show their presence at the event”. The order said directions were applicable only to heads and teachers of schools located

in the rural areas of the district and urban schools in the city.

Teachers are said to have been miffed over the fact that instead of asking them to perform duties at the said event, they have been asked only to show their ‘presence’. They (teachers) said the exercise, as always, was seemingly done to fill up the stadium to impress the Education Minister.

A school teacher on condition of anonymity said: “We have no problem with the orders as we are ready to perform any duties. But we are being asked to only show our presence. Instead of this, we could have celebrated Republic Day with schoolchildren at our schools.”

When asked about the said order, District Education Officer (DEO)

Kulbhushan Bajwa said: “The orders were passed so that teachers should participate in the Republic Day event.”
