Residents want govt to ensure security

With cases of theft, snatching and loot being reported from parts of the city, residents are worried about their security. It seems criminals have no fear of law. Many of these incidents have taken place in broad daylight.

Police patrolling is almost missing in most internal streets. The residents want the Captain government and the police to take measures to control such incidents and ensure their security.

Dr Amandeep Singh Bains of RBS Roots (NGO) said: “Youths with their faces covered and riding triple on bikes sans number plates is a common sight on internal streets. There is no check to stop snatching incidents in these streets. The government should take measures to control such incidents. We want that the police should start a campaign in collaboration with residents’ welfare associations to catch snatchers,” he said.

Jaswant Singh Jirakh from Maha Sabha NGO said: “The government has failed to address the issue of unemployment. Because of unemployment, some persons are forced to commit theft and snatching. The government should ensure jobs to youths. The entire responsibility to stop corrupt practices in government offices rests with the state government. The government should take measures to provide jobs so that incidents of loot and theft can be controlled.”

Police Commissioner Rakesh Agrawal said: “The incidents of theft and snatching are not increasing in the city. The fact is that the police have ensured registration of FIRs in all incidents now. Moreover, drug addicts are behind most scooter or bike thefts. The criminals behind these incidents are being identified and arrested. We recovered seven stolen bikes today.”

Recent thefts

• The bike of Manish Dutt of Sham Colony was stolen on Friday afternoon.
• Akash Bhandari of Jassian Road also reported theft of his bike on Friday from near the court complex. The complainant said he learnt that two more bikes were stolen from the same location recently.
• The scooter of Shashi Mani of Dashmesh Nagar was stolen from outside Krishna Mandir, Model Town, on Friday.

Snatching incidents

• Two bike-borne persons armed with rods snatched a bag containing Rs70,000, a tablet, an ATM and documents from Satwinder Singh at Sutlej Bank near Ladhowal on February 11.
• Two bikers allegedly snatched a purse containing Rs800 and Aadhaar card from Ashok Kumar Jha, a resident of Gurmit Nagar in Giaspura, at Focal Point, Phase VI, on Thursday. The suspects, identified as Rohan and Kamal Mehra of Shimlapuri, have been arrested.
