New Delhi, February 27

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today termed Delhi riots a matter of national shame while Congress chief Sonia Gandhi reiterated the demand for Home Minister Amit Shah’s resignation as the party petitioned President Ram Nath Kovind on the prevailing situation.

“We called upon the President to suggest that what is happening in the national capital is a matter of deep concern and a matter of national shame... a reflection of total failure of the Central Government to control the situation. We requested the President to use his power to call upon the Central Government to protect and preserve its ‘Raj Dharma’ so that the national capital is assured of peace and justice,” Singh told the reporters.

Reading from the memorandum the Congress submitted to the President, Sonia Gandhi said while parts of northeast Delhi have been gripped by violence that has grown in intensity, the Centre and the newly elected Delhi Government have remained mute spectators. The memorandum read, “You should immediately call for the removal of the Home Minister given the gross ineptitude, abdication of duty and his inability to contain the situation.”

" A complaint lodged by me to save 16 lives went unheeded by police. Those trapped in a house got no assistance. They managed to escape as Hindu neighbours came to rescue."
