Bathinda, December 10
Members of the Revolutionary Marxist Party of India (RMPI) staged a protest and burnt an effigy of the Union Government to express their resentment over alleged human rights violations in the country.
Scores of protesters gathered near the Ambedkar chowk and started raising slogans against the government. Later, they carried out a protest march in various parts of the city. The protesters demanded revocation of the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
The march was taken out by union members to mark the International Human Rights Day, which is observed every year on December 10.
Parkash Singh, finance secretary of the RMPI, Bathinda unit, said: “Awarding citizenship on the basis of religion will foment communal tensions in the country. We demand that both the CAB and the NRC be revoked by the Union Government.”
“The people of Jammu & Kashmir must be given all democratic and constitutional rights and all civil services must be reinstated. We will not tolerate the division of the country on sectarian lines as was done in 1947,” Singh added.
They said a protest would be carried out by trade unions and workers’ unions against the Union Government for its neo-liberal policies on January 8. —TNS
