Woman gets life term for killing husband

The court of Sessions Judge Tejwinder Singh today awarded life imprisonment to a 40-year-old woman for killing her husband.

The woman, Baljit Kaur, a resident of Beharwala Kala village was booked in December 2012 for allegedly murdering her husband, Harbans Singh.

In a complaint to the police, Jagveer Singh, a resident of Ghudda, said the deceased was his father-in-law and the accused is his mother-in-law. The woman came to his house on December 13, 2012 to meet her daughter (complainant’s wife).

Jagveer said he is a labourer and his father-in-law accused his wife of being friendly with a person, Gurpreet Singh. The husband, too, followed his wife in Ghudda village where he saw her with one Gurpreet Singh.

The husband raised a hue and cry and asked called her a shameless woman as she was roaming around with an unknown person. During heated arguments, the woman declared her husband as a hurdle between them following which, Gurpreet hit at the woman’s husband with an iron rod.

Residents of the village gathered around the family members after the incident and reported the matter to the police following which a case was registered.

During the course of investigation, it was found that one of the two accused, Gurpreet Singh is a juvenile and was sent to a juvenile home. He was sent to the Juvenile Justice Board for trial with allegations of murder.

The woman was sent to jail and during the period of trial, she pleaded that a lenient view might be taken for awarding the quantum of sentence to her as she is mother of three children, including two unmarried, and she is also suffering from various ailments.

The court, however, observed that since the woman had killed her husband with the help of Gurpreet Singh, she did not deserve any leniency and must undergo life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10,000. In case of default of payment, she would further undergo imprisonment for a period of six months.
