Jalandhar, December 11

Agitated over pending dues, the Water Supply and Sanitation Department Workers’ Union today organised a sit-in-dharna in front of the District Administrative Complex. Hindering the traffic for almost an hour, they also burnt the effigy of state Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal.

“Today is December 11, and we are yet to receive the salaries of previous month,” said Sukhnandan Singh Mehnia, president of the union.

Quoting the Finance Minister’s statements which he gave on Tuesday that “the state government was not short of funds and the salaries of the employees were withheld as a “punishment” for not complying with the instructions of the Finance Department,” Mehnia said it was unfair to hold the salaries of the employees, especially Class IV workers. However, the government has reportedly paid the salaries of Class I officers.

Before burning the effigy of the minister, the workers also conducted a meeting at the Desh Bhagat Yaadgar Hall and reached the Deputy Commissioner’s office on foot. Sanjeev Kondal, a member of the union said, most of the workers had taken loans and due to the unpaid salaries, it was difficult to manage their expenses. Demanding immediate disbursal of their dues, the workers also demanded the government to implement the 6th Pay Commission, pay the DA instalments and grade payments of field workers.
