Sameer Shergill, a 12-year-old chess prodigy from the school, has made history by becoming the youngest-ever Punjab State Open Blitz Chess Champion. Competing in the Punjab Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships 2024-25, organised by the Ropar District Chess Association on behalf of the Punjab State Chess Association under the aegis of the All India Chess Federation, Sameer delivered a phenomenal performance. Held from January 11 to 12, 2025, at GMN Senior Secondary School, Ropar, his victory set a new milestone that will be remembered for years. Sameer’s accomplishments were further highlighted when he secured third place in the State Rapid Chess Championship, achieving a remarkable double triumph. The trophies were awarded by MLA from Ropar Dinesh Chadda. With these victories, Sameer will proudly represent Punjab at the National Blitz and Rapid Championships in Jharkhand. Earlier this month, Sameer demonstrated his exceptional skills at the Matrix Delhi International Chess Championship, held in Dwarka, Delhi, finishing an impressive 10th in the open category. He is all set to lead the Punjab Under-14 chess team at the National School Games in Nanded, Maharashtra, later this month. Principal Ira Bogra, along with Directors Charanjeet Singh Mann and Simrita Mann, applauded him and showered their blessings upon him.
