School kids create 'micro oxygen chamber' in Ludhiana

Taking up the responsibility of saving Mother Earth and Environment a group of scghool children in Ludhiana have created a micro oxygen chamber (micro forest) that is “By the kids for the kids” by planting 750 tree saplings in 250 sq yards of area in Rakh Bagh. 

This micro forest has been planted under the supervision of the green couple Rohit Mehra IRS and Geetanjali Mehra. 

A group of 10 school going children from Ludhiana namely Pratibha Sharma, Madhvi Sharma, Vaibhav Kapoor, Dhruv Mehra, Udhay Mehra, Diya Bharara, Lavanya Sehgal, Viraansh Bharara, Nitya Bassi and Dishita Bharara took active interest in this noble initiative. 

Rohit Mehra said that it is the first ever forest created by kids in the world, which is for the kids.

He said that 60 different varieties, that are native of Punjab area, have been planted in this micro forest.

Madhvi Sharma, a student of Class XI at Sacred Heart Convent School, Ludhiana, said that in this pandemic, everyone had realised the importance of oxygen. “We all know that trees are the only source of natural oxygen”.

Another member of the group, Pratibha Sharma, a Class IX student at Sacred Heart Convent School said the current weather was the best for planting trees and urged everyone, especially children, to plant a maximum number of trees. 

Vaibhav Kapoor, a student of Class VII of Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School, BRS Nagar, said the micro forest had been planted to provide a source of oxygen for future generations. 

All participating children took a pledge to save this micro forest and to fertilise and irrigate it for a period of two years till it became self-sustainable.

They said the forest would host a variety of birds, who find it difficult to get safe abode in concrete-dominated urban areas. They also urged everyone to plant a maximum number of trees so that Ludhiana can become an oxygen-rich city. tNS
