Modi to inaugurate Rs 22,500 crore Micron ATMP facility in Sanand, Gujarat
Strategic boost for tech, defence, and AI as Micron begins operations
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday will inaugurate Micron’s Rs 22,500-crore Semiconductor Assembly, Test and Packaging (ATMP) facility in Sanand, Gujarat, marking the start of commercial production and shipment of the first made-in-India semiconductor memory modules from the plant — a major milestone in the country’s semiconductor manufacturing journey.
The facility, set up by Micron Technology’s India arm, represents a significant step in strengthening India’s position in the global semiconductor value chain. The project was the first proposal approved under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), with its ground-breaking ceremony held in September 2023. With a total investment exceeding Rs 22,500 crore, construction began soon after approval, underscoring the government’s push to fast-track strategic semiconductor investments.
Once fully ramped up, the Sanand facility will house around 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space, making it one of the world’s largest raised-floor cleanrooms. Designed to serve customers worldwide, the plant aims to meet the rising global demand for memory and storage solutions driven by rapid advancements in AI and high-performance computing.
The Sanand ATMP facility will convert advanced Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) and NAND semiconductor wafers from Micron’s global manufacturing network into finished memory and storage products for customers across international markets.
Semiconductors lie at the core of modern technology, powering critical systems in healthcare, transportation, communications, defence and space, making this development strategically significant for India’s technological and economic ambitions.
