Muktsar, February 27

Overflowing sewage and contamination of drinking water are the major issues being faced by residents, who are even raising their voice from the past many years but situation largely remains the same.

For instance, a number of manholes are overflowing in the town. Though some men and machinery are being used to solve this menace, yet the situation is such a bad that it would take a long time, said some local residents.

A random visit of town reveals the fact that a number of streets are flooded with sewage and posing a health hazard to locals. Further, it is a difficult task to cross the inundated streets.

Notably, the water supply and sanitation department had recently bought a robot to clean the manholes. “The robot too takes time and it needs awareness among locals as well, who keep throwing solid waste into drains and streets,” said some locals.

Meanwhile, PS Dhanju, Executive Engineer, Water Supply and Sanitation Department, Muktsar, said, “We are trying our best to clean the sewerage system. A number of machines are being used for this purpose. However, public too should keep in mind that solid waste chokes the sewerage system.”

Some residents of Narang Colony said they were living in hell like situation from the past many years. “Not just during the rains, our streets remain flooded with sewage even in normal days. We have requested the authorities concerned but they too seem to be helpless in finding out a permanent solution,” said some local residents.

The situation is similar in some parts of Malout town as well. They have even lodged a number of protests against the Water Supply and Sewerage Board officials. Notably, in Malout town, sewerage system comes under the local bodies department.
