Civic non-sense
Amritsaris sure have a sense of humour, but the incidents I am narrating don’t really qualify under the category even if some residents would like to believe so.
I just can’t get over the sight — a government building being painted green to mark the diligent officer incharge’s contribution to making Amritsar green! Was it funny this silly waste of public funds? I don’t think so. It should have extracted suitable rebuke and action against the gentleman.
Then there was the incident in Ranjit Avenue way back when the civic authorities put huge garbage collection boxes at a couple of sites. Instead of being put to suitable use and ensuring cleanliness, the boxes were ripped apart one night and taken away by miscreants. There was no protest, and only amusement at the turn of events.
For me, personally, it showed an utter lack of civic sense and acceptance of irresponsible behaviour.
It’s easy to put posters in Amritsar that proclaim the city as ‘Sifti Da Ghar’; it is quite another to live up to it.
