No work, no ethics
As the debate rages on about what should be the ideal office work hours during a week, every office has its unique tales about employees who can go to any lengths to avoid working.
In our office, I can never forget the legendary Sharma Sahib. Such was his detestation for work that he would keep coming up with unique excuses for taking leave, or just not working. We would often wonder how he, otherwise a perfectly normal individual, would manage to secure medical leave running into weeks — and once, even as a special case so that he did not have to forego his salary.
The day he retired, we would not let him go till he spilled the beans.
Sheepishly, he let out the secret. ‘When I really felt like not coming to office, I would go to the hospital and feign illness by fainting right at the door. Then, the doctors would prescribe all kinds of tests on the official notepad, and that always worked. I would submit these papers to the office, and quietly head home. Who could question the hospital authorities?”
Now, was one supposed to laugh or just be dumbfounded?
